I’ve had an exciting week in my corner of Romancelandia. My 14 talented co-authors and I found out A Midsummer Night’s Romance, our connected anthology that comes out tomorrow, has already hit #1 in Amazon Regency Romance rankings just with pre-orders! Admittedly, this book is an incredible deal at under $1 for 15 novellas.

A Midsummer Night’s Romance takes place at the most anticipated event of the Season — Lord and Lady Whitwell’s annual ball, where this year’s theme is the most extravagant yet…A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Filled with fairytale gardens and fantastical costumes, sparkling champagne, and heartwarming romance. Opportunities abound for secret trysts in the shadows of moonlit walks, mistaken identities, delicious unmaskings, and perhaps even a magical spell or two. But one thing is certain—fifteen pairs of hearts will never be the same again.

My story starts before one would-be party goer even steps off the boat. The ship, Su Ling’s second home, is also the first place she runs into Anthony, the future Duke of Birchhill. He’s a noble sort who wants to protect the biracial Su Ling Phillips, but Anthony soon discovers that Su Ling is not helpless, doesn’t want his rescue, and is an enchanting woman in her own right.

Though my mother is Chinese, I had to do intense research to make sure my bi-racial, half-Chinese heroine in “Her Wildest Dreams” came though in an authentic way. Part of that research led me down some incredibly interesting rabbit holes—in particular about my ancestors. Here are three discoveries I made. You’ll have to pick up a copy of A Midsummer Night’s Romance to find out the story about how one my ancestors put two carved, stone dragons on trial. Look for this fun tidbit at the end of “Her Wildest Dreams” in A Midsummer Night’s Romance anthology!

3 Interesting Facts about Jade Lee’s Ancestors.

Warning: Some of these are not for the faint of heart. (Sorry for the heart reference. You’ll understand why in #3.)

  1. One of my ancestors signed the document that leased Hong Kong to the British for 99 years.
  2. My great grandmother had bound feet barely over three inches long. When running to an air raid shelter from bombs in WWII, her grandsons had to carry her, one on each side, while her feet still ran in the air.
  3. One of my ancestors governed a province in China that was troubled by bandits. When he finally caught the evildoers, he cut out the leader’s heart and ate it raw to intimidate others. It worked!
